It amazes me the amount of information we can find online. It can really be data overload especially when it comes to car shopping on the internet.

So exactly how does one find a nice car online?

You can start by focusing on inventory that is listed by large franchise dealers. The reason is that a large dealer get most of their pre-owned inventory from trades on new car purchases. The junk cars go to wholesalers and find a home on these small car lots and dealers keep the nicer cars. Your chances of finding a nice car dramatically increase when you purchase from a large dealer.

There is the old saying, if something is too good to be true it probably is so buyers beware. There are several pricing services online you can reference. When someone is trying to sell a car well below market value it probably is not a nice car or at the very least it is going to cost you some serious money to fix. If you want to buy long distance and you need to feel comfortable about the purchase you can pay a 3rd party to inspect the car for you. If you have relatives or a friend in the area you can also try to send someone by to have a look. Any reputable dealer will not have a problem helping you with this and if they do it is a red flag.

People search online by using their zip code and selecting a search radius. When someone can't find a car close to where they live they will increase the search radius. If you get really desperate you can search the whole USA. There are also advanced search options you can set on many online search sites where you specifically select color, engine, transmission, type of fuel, etc.

Actually it is not that difficult to buy a car out of state. You can use a national bank if you want to finance. We are a Volkswagen, Mazda and Kia dealer and have a large resource of banks we work with. Sometimes we work in reverse. We put the paper work together and people drive or fly in. We test drive the car and then walk into finance. Saves time and you are in and out of the dealership in a short amount of time. We get the ball rolling via fax machine and if you use a shipper the transaction can be completed via FedEx.

Make sure you always reference a Carfax and work with a Carfax dealer. Carfax is the history of the car. It is not perfect but certainly better than nothing. It can tell you how many owners, if the mileage is accurate, possibly list accidents, service and when and where the car was punched into service.
